Cruisin for the Kids: Second Annual Angels on Wheels Motorcycle Run to Benefit Dell Children’s Medical Center

Austin, Texas – (September 2, 2009) – Circle of Friends is proud to announce its Second Annual Angels on Wheels Motorcycle Run on Saturday, November 14, benefiting Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.

Motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to support Central Texas children in this motorcycle run that begins at Mueller Park (around the corner from Dell Children’s) and continues throughout the Austin area. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the first bike will leave at 9 a.m. The ride will conclude where the street party begins! From 1 p.m. – 11 p.m., Angels on Wheels participants will receive free admission into a street party outside the Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave. Guests will enjoy a fantastic lineup of musical entertainment. Dale Watson will perform at 2 p.m, followed by Down 1450 and Andrea Marie and the Magnolia Band. Event sponsor Zingers Bar & Grill will serve a delicious fajita buffet, keg beer and soft drinks at 3:30 p.m.

Registration for the motorcycle run is $25 per individual online before the event ($30 on the day of the event) and includes a goody bag and free entrance into the street party. The public is invited to the street party, and the price of admission is $20 per person and includes food, drink tickets and entertainment.

Petty Officer First Class Marcus Luttrell was born in Huntsville, Texas in 1975. A graduate of BUD/S Class 228, he was the only survivor of the fateful events of June 28, 2005 in Afghanistan. Luttrell and three teammates from SEAL Team TEN were assigned to a reconnaissance mission, operation RED WING, in the Hindu-Kush mountain region of Afghanistan. Their objective was to gather intelligence on Taliban movement in the area. Luttrell’s team was eventually discovered and outnumbered by over 200 Taliban fighters.

Petty Officer Luttrell was the only one to survive enemy contact. In the rescue mission that ensued, 16 Special Forces personnel, including 8 SEALs, died when their helicopter was shot down by Taliban fighters. It was the largest single-day loss of life in the SEALs’ history. In 2006, Petty Officer Luttrell was awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism.

His full story is documented in his heroic account of the operation, entitled: Lone Survivor.
